Year 4

Notices

Please remember to bring your book bag to school every day with reading books inside. Children will have the opportunity to change their library book every week. We encourage children to read at home 4 times a week and logging this on Boomreader.

Please remember to come to school in your PE kits on PE days with appropriate footwear, hair tied back and earrings either removed or covered. Our PE days are Monday (4PB indoor and 4SL outdoor) and 4SL Wednesday (indoor), 4PB Friday (outdoor). Please bring a healthy snack for breaktime and a named water bottle everyday.

Mr Buxton and Miss Lowe.

TT Rockstars

It is essential that children become secure with times tables (2x – 12x) and they should be practising these every day. TT Rockstars is a fantastic game-based app/website to support times table practice and it can be accessed via most devices. Please support children to log on at home and practice for at least 10 minutes every day. Log in details can be found in children’s pink homework books. Please ask us if you have any questions or difficulties logging on.

Christmas Week

This week, we have been completing our DT project. Our aim was to produce a spinning Christmas/winter scene. We began our project by learning about gears and how they work. We designed our spinning scenes thinking about what figurine we would like in the centre. We had a choice of a Christmas tree, snowman, penguin, gingerbread man or Santa.  When making our spinning scenes, we needed to create two circular gears using cardboard and attach them to a box using a dowel rod. We used lots of different skills such as sawing the dowel rods, folding and gluing paper (for our figurines) and cutting and gluing all the parts together.

Take a look at our learning below…

8.12.25 Science – Exploring invertebrates

In science, we have been learning to classify living things. We have learned the difference between vertebrates and invertebrates. As part of our lesson today, we went on a hunt around school to find some invertebrates – ladybirds, worms, slugs, snails, centipedes and woodlice. We also had some images of some different vertebrates that we had to sort into different groups.

4.12.25 Egyptian Artwork

This week we have been learning about Alaa Awad and Fathi Hassan who are both modern day artists who have been inspired by Ancient Egypt. We looked at the different types of Egyptian headdresses and thought about what we liked and didn’t like about them. We explored how we can create different effects using brusho, metallic paints, fabric crayons and gold leaf before making our very own Egyptian headdresses. Take a look at some of our work below…

UNICEF Week

For UNICEF week, year 4 have been looking at Global Goal 2 – Zero Hunger. In English, we learned all about food banks and how they can help us to achieve this goal. We wrote a persuasive speech for the people of Loughborough to convince them to donate to our local food bank.

In Design and Technology, we created a low-cost, healthy bread for malnourished children. Before designing and making our bread, we taste tested lots of different ingredients that we could use. We also needed to learn some skills we would need to make our bread. We had to learn how to peel and chop vegetables using the claw technique as well as how to knead dough.

Take a look at our learning below and our finished bread products.

Moorland Discovery Centre – Tuesday 14th October

We had a wonderful day at the Moorland Discovery Centre on Tuesday. We made some measurements of a stream including depth, width and we timed how long it would take for a dog biscuit to travel 5m along the current. We explored the moors and learned about how the brook joins to the River Derwent which in turn joins with the River Trent. We had a wonderful day!

Rolling on a River – DT – Water Turbines

In DT, we have been learning about water turbines. We learned about how a water turbine consists of a turbine and a generator.  A generator is a machine that produces electricity. We researched existing products before planning and designing our own turbines. Our turbines had to rotate smoothly, be durable and secure, be waterproof and the turbine blades must be an equal distance apart. Take a look at our turbines!

Science Experiment – How does sound travel through different solids, liquids and gases?

We carried out 4 different experiments to observe how sound travels through different mediums. We discovered that sound is louder when it travels through a solid rather than a liquid and a gas. This is because the particles in a solid are close together so the sound can travel to our ears quicker.
