Year 3

Year 3

Please find useful information regarding Year 3.

Reading

Reading books need to be in school every day please. Your child will bring home two reading books each week and these will usually be swapped during the week. Please try to listen to your child read at least four times each week and this should be recorded on BoomReader.

Spelling

Each child has a spelling book and in this, they will be given a new set of spellings to practise at home. This needs to be brought in every Monday.

P.E Days

PE days for 3LE are on Wednesdays and Fridays. PE days for 3SB are on Tuesdays and Fridays. Please can you ensure that long hair is tied back and jewellery is removed for these days.

Instruments

Our new instrument this year is the ocarina. Please ensure these are kept within book bags each day as we will practise throughout the week.

Thank you for your cooperation and watch this space for regular updates!

Representing Fractions-Maths Investigation 13.04.26

During our maths investigation, we explored representing different fractions in different ways. The children learned that a fraction shows a proportion, and that it can represent part of a shape, part of a group, or part of a single object. They then created a range of diagrams to show fractions such as ½, ¼ and ⅓, making sure each representation was different. This activity helped them deepen their understanding of the numerator and denominator, and allowed them to reason, compare ideas and explain how their drawings showed the fraction. Some children were challenged to show equivalent fractions and understood the pattern using their times table knowledge. Well done, Year 3!

Narrative Writing 25.03.26

Year 3 have been busy developing our storytelling skills by writing our own narrative based on our class novel, Leon and the Place Between. Using the rabbit as our main character, we explored this magical scene in depth, imagining what the rabbit might see, hear and feel as it tumbles into a world filled with wonder and mystery. Using rich vocabulary, a range of conjunctions, descriptive sentences and their growing understanding of narrative structure, they created imaginative stories that brought this enchanting moment to life. Their writing shows real creativity, confidence and a deep engagement with the text.

Art and Christa Rijneveld 24.02.26

During our art topic exploring mountains, our Year 3s had a wonderful time experimenting with brusho while learning about the artwork of our focus artist, Christa Rijneveld. The children loved watching the brusho powders burst into bright colours as they sprinkled water over their paper, trying to capture the same sense of movement and natural shapes seen in Rijneveld’s work. They explored how different colours blended, how lines could be added to suggest mountains or waves, and how art can feel both calm and expressive at the same time. It was a creative, hands‑on session that left them excited to keep experimenting with new techniques.

Diet and Nutrition Science Lesson- 9.02.26

We had a brilliant time in science this week learning about the five main food groups. The children brought in food packaging from home and worked together to sort each item into the correct group—fruits and vegetables, carbohydrates, proteins, dairy, and fats and oils. They enjoyed examining the labels, spotting clues like ingredients and nutrition tables, and discussing why each food belonged where. It turned into a fun, hands-on investigation that helped them understand how different foods help our bodies in different ways.

Magna Science Adventure Trip 4.02.26

Our Year 3 class had an amazing time visiting the Magna Science Centre. First, they participated in a volcanoes workshop where they learnt how magma rises beneath the Earth’s crust, why volcanoes erupt, and what happens when pressure builds up inside. They were fascinated by the model eruption and enjoyed spotting the differences between lava, ash and gas. The children also loved exploring the four exciting zones —Earth, where they felt the ground rumble beneath their feet; Air, where giant fans blasted wind strong enough to make their hair fly; Fire, with its glowing heat and dramatic flame demonstrations; and Water, where they splashed, pumped and experimented with flowing streams. The whole day felt like one big adventure filled with curiosity, discovery and plenty of excitement.

Oracy Pairs and Trios 26.01.26

During our oracy lesson, we practised our communication and summarising skills where we needed to provide a clear, reasoned explanations. During our discussions, we practised being an instigator, a builder and a challenger. This helped us to listen carefully to our partner’s point of view, and either build on their points or to challenge them. It was great practice at not only being able to articulate our opinions, but also learn to respectfully challenge our partners. We will continue to practise all three of these roles.

Roundhouses WOW Day 6.01.2026

As part of our learning on the Iron Age, Year 3 designed and created their own roundhouses! We used our prior knowledge on weaving to create the structure, layered straw to create the roof and ensured there was a hole at the top of the roof in order to allow smoke to escape. Each group added additional features to replicate an Iron Age settlement.

DT Christmas Week: 18.12.2025

Year 3 have been busy making a Christmas decoration this week in preparation to sell to our parents! For our DT focus, we have learnt to sew using the blanket stitch and researched, planned and designed our own product. We also used our prior knowledge of the running stitch to help us decorate the front with bows, clothing, eyes and smiles. Some of us even sewed buttons on too! We’re very proud of our final product and can’t wait to take them home.

Topic: Stone Age Extravaganza 26.11.25

As part of our Stone Age topic, we enjoyed an exciting visit from the Stone Age Extravaganza team. They set up a tent on our school field and we stepped back in time to the STONE AGE! It was truly fascinating. We learned about what life was like during the Stone Age era through a range of interesting artefacts and hands on experiences.

Topic: Lascaux Caves and Cave Art 18.11.25

We explored the Lascaux caves in art today, which taught us how prehistoric people were incredibly skilled artists, using natural pigments and creative techniques long before modern tools existed. Using this as inspiration, we created our own shades of browns and greens—using only the three primary colours—and sketched different prehistoric animals. We focused on creating a range of light and dark tones, preparing us for when we create our own cave paintings.

English 08.10.25

In English, we have been using our novel, Arthur and the Golden Rope, as inspiration to draft our own quests.  These stories include our own ferocious beasts for Arthur to slay using an indestructible tool of our choice! Using a range of conjunctions and super descriptive vocabulary, we have written the first two paragraphs.

Topic How Mountains are Formed 23.09.25

This week in topic we learnt how mountains are formed. We learnt about three different mountain types: fault mountains, fold mountains and dome mountains. Using key terminology, we explained the differences between them.

Charnwood Museum Rocks Trip 24.09.25

Year 3 had an exciting day out at the Charnwood Museum, learning about the fascinating world of rocks and their importance throughout Charnwood’s history. During a hands-on rock workshop, the children became mini geologists — investigating the unique properties of different rocks, exploring the three main rock types, and using classification keys to identify and sort their samples. They also discovered how rocks have been used around Loughborough over time, compared rocks, minerals, and fossils up close, and even created their own geological timeline.
