Our Learning

WB 29.09.25 – Geography – Extreme Weather

As part of our Geography learning this week, we studied extreme weather and how it affects different parts of the world. We explored events such as tornadoes, hurricanes, blizzards, droughts, and heatwaves, focusing particularly on those that often occur in the USA. As Geographers, we discovered how climate, location, and physical geography influence these powerful weather patterns. To showcase our understanding, we created eye-catching double-page spreads combining explanations and illustrations to explain and compare the different forms of extreme weather.

WB 29.09.25 – English – Writing Dialogue

In English this week, we revisited direct speech and learnt how to use dialogue to advance the action in our writing. We explored how conversations between characters can reveal emotions, build tension, and move the story forward. To deepen our understanding, we took part in a creative activity to practise using speech punctuation correctly and starting a new line for a new speaker. We created some dialogue between two characters from our class text, ‘Floodland’.

WB 15.09.25 – Geography – Landmarks in the USA

Today we used our research of key landmarks within the USA to create a visual map. We used an atlas to identify where each state was on the map to then label the landmark in the correct place on our map. We added an illustration as well as some key facts.

WB 08.09.25 – Geography – Human and Physical Features

This week, we explored human and physical features within the USA including famous landmarks such as  The Statue Liberty, The Golden Gate Bridge, The Grand Canyon and The White House. We conducted our own research to find out key facts about each landmark as well as which state each one can be found in. We also used the VR headsets to visit some of the landmarks! We will be using the information we found out to create our own labelled map of the USA.

WB 01.09.2025 – Science – Investigating Materials

Year 5 have spent their first couple of science lessons investigating different materials and their properties. In the first lesson, they conducted 3 simple tests to explore the properties of transparency, hardness and magnetism in a range of materials and made comparisons between them. In the following lesson, they built electrical circuits to investigate whether each material was an electrical conductor or electrical insulator. We’re looking forward to testing thermal conductivity in our next lesson!
