Welcome to Foundation! We have lots of fun learning opportunities planned throughout the year and we are so excited to watch your child flourish at Rendell.
Reading days – Books will only get changed if the previous book is returned.
Miss Benincasa – Monday

PE is on a Friday. Your child should arrive to school in their PE kit, suitable for the weather and appropriate for indoor or outdoor PE sessions.
Forest Friday is on a Friday. Please bring wellies and waterproofs. These can be left at school for the half term.
Please ensure your child has a named water bottle and all their items of clothing are labelled.
Please ensure your child brings their bookbag to school with their reading book inside everyday. Reading books will be changed weekly. Please remember to listen to your child read at least 4 times a week and log it on BoomReader!
Phonics
For Phonics information and support, please visit the Phonics section in the Parents section of our school website.
Handwriting
Please practice handwriting with your child. Using the phonics handwriting rhymes ensures the children are forming the letters correctly.

28th October 2026 – Making pumpkin soup!
We had lots of fun getting busy in the kitchen making our own pumpkin soup. The children enjoyed getting hands-on helping to prepare the ingredients. Just like in the story ‘Pumpkin soup’ each child played a part in making the soup; some chopped pumpkin, some children grated carrots whilst others peeled potatoes. It was great to hear lots of conversations about the textures, colour and smells. Once it had cooked the children got to taste their soup.
Thursday 15th October – Superheroes in Our Community!
We were delighted to welcome our local police officers to Rendell Primary School. The children learnt all about the important role police officers play in our community, including how they help to keep us safe, protect people and help when someone is in trouble. We talked about what police officers wear, the equipment they use and how we can recognise them when we need help. The children were able to explore the police car and learned that a police car has 4 different sirens! The visit encouraged the children to think about our big question: “Who are the superheroes in our community?” We discovered that superheroes don’t always wear capes — they can be the everyday people who help and care for others!
A huge thank you to our local police officers for taking the time to visit us and help bring our learning to life. The children loved finding out more about how they can be superheroes too by helping others and making safe choices!
Wednesday 14th October 2026 – A visit from our wonderful dentists!
We were delighted to welcome Katy and Anuszka from Peacock Dental Spa, Loughborough, who visited us to talk about their important role in helping us look after our teeth! The children learnt lots of useful tips about keeping their teeth healthy, including how long we should brush our teeth for, how many times a day we should brush, and why grown-ups should still be brushing their teeth for them at this age.
We also talked about making healthy choices when it comes to the food we eat and the drinks we enjoy, and how these choices can help to keep our teeth strong and healthy.
A huge thank you to Katy and Anuszka for taking the time to visit us and share their knowledge. The children loved learning how to take care of their smiles!
7th October 2026 – The job of a postal worker
This week, we have been learning all about the important job of a postal worker and what happens to a letter once we put it in the post. To really understand the role, the children became postal customers themselves! They each made a special card to send home and we talked about how to write a card, including who it was for and what we might like to say. Some children were even able to use their early phonics knowledge to write words in their cards. All of the children proudly wrote their own names to finish their card. Once their cards were ready, the children added a stamp to their brightly coloured, addressed envelopes. Then came the exciting part… we put on our coats and headed out into the rain! On our walk, we practised some very important road safety skills, learning how to cross the road safely and how to walk carefully along the pavement.
We were also very lucky to meet a postal worker while he was out delivering letters. The children stopped for a chat and asked him what was inside his trolley. They loved seeing the parcels and letters ready to be delivered and were excited to spot postal vans travelling around our local area. Finally, we reached the big red post box and every child proudly posted their own letter. The children shared photos of them receiving their letters at their houses.
5th October 2026 – Fire fighter visit
🚒 We had a very special visit from the fire fighters today! 🚒
The children were very excited to welcome our local fire fighters and learn all about their important job. They talked us through the different equipment they keep in their fire engine and explained how each item helps them when they are called to an emergency. The children had the opportunity to sit inside the fire engine and spot some of the equipment the fire fighters need, including their helmet, boots, trousers, top, gas mask and torch. They were even able to have a go at holding some of the equipment themselves! To finish our visit, the children listened carefully to the sirens and noticed the blue flashing lights on the fire engine.
It was a fantastic, hands-on learning experience and the children showed lots of curiosity as they asked questions and explored the fire engine. We would like to say a huge thank you to Leicestershire fire fighters for taking the time to visit us!
Wb 28th September 2026 – Superhero day
What an amazing Superhero Day we had! The children arrived ready for action and began the day with superhero yoga before taking on a range of exciting superhero-themed challenges. They hunted for sounds, cracked secret repeating-pattern codes to help save Teddy from evil pea, and went round an action-packed obstacle course, where the children showed off their super speed, balance, jumping and agility skills.
The excitement continued in the afternoon with a fantastic superhero parade and they got creative making their very own superhero capes. We ended our brilliant day by relaxing together with a superhero story. It was a fantastic day full of fun, learning and plenty of superhero power!
Wb 14th September 2026 – Self- portraits
Today, we used mirrors to take a really good look at ourselves before creating our own self-portraits using paint sticks! The children carefully observed their features, noticing their eyes, nose, mouth, hair and face shape, and then used what they could see in the mirror to create their own pictures. We talked about what makes each of us unique and special, celebrating our similarities and differences.

Wb 7th September 2026 – Settling in
The children have made a fantastic start and are settling beautifully into their new routines and classroom environment. They have been busy exploring, making new friends and growing in confidence each day. We are so proud of how well they are beginning their exciting learning journey with us!
